Protecting Lions from Poaching Snares

SLCS lion anti-snaring team
The SLCS Lion Anti-Snaring Team targets areas of high risk or use by lions as determined by ZCP data and has also been involved in a study of snaring patterns.
Wire poaching snares set for the commercial bushmeat trade can frequently injure or kill lions that accidentally encounter them. Together the Zambian Carnivore Programme, South Luangwa Conservation Society, and National Geographic's Big Cats Initiative are working to reduce this serious threat in the Luangwa Valley

Snaring Warning
Poaching snares are readily made from surplus wire around camps, shops and residences; thus treating and storing wire similar to ammunition is important in reducing snaring.

ZCP & SLCS
ZCP staff Henry Mwape and Thandi Mweetwa and SLCS CEO Rachel McRobb attend to an immobilized lioness with a snare.

Rescued Lions
Snared lions that were darted and treated by ZCP and SLCS staff, comprising a significant portion of the population that avoided serious injury or death due to these rescue efforts.
